TTRA 2015 European Chapter Conference

April 22-24, 2015, Innsbruck, Austria

In-depth insights about Service Innovation and Experience in Tourism:

The MCI Tourism in Innsbruck (Austria) hosted this year’s TTRA Europe conference. TTRA Europe board member Mike Peters welcomed 60 researchers from 24 different countries !

The conference topic „Service Innovation and Experiences in Tourism“ brought together both researchers investigating consumer behavior patterns in tourism and scholars who analyzed management and entrepreneurial behavior in tourism and hospitality. Over 40 presentations focused on innovation management, measurement and diffusion with special emphasis on destination management, hotel management and information technologies in hospitality and tourism. As „Heart of the Alps“ Innsbruck is located in the Austrian Alps and the Tyrol attract 10 mio. visitors per year: therefore several papers dealt with mountain-specific issues such as climate change and skiing experiences.

All these contributions were framed by five keynote presentations: on the one hand local Tyrolean innovations were presented by the CEO of the Tirol Tourism Board Josef Margreiter and the director of the Tyrol’s Cinetirol Film Commission Johannes Koeck.

Marc Stickdorn (Smaply, Austria) and Sarah Drummond (Snook, Scotland) gave insights into the world of service design thinking and social innovations and derived lessons to be learned for tourism managers. On the other hand further international keynotes covered the growing importance of movie tourism (Oliver Henry-Biabaud, TCI Research) and presented the most influential tourism brands (Luc Durand presented newest data from an IPSOS study). Ady Milman (Rosen College, University of Central Florida) closed the conference with his speech on the creation of service experiences in tourism. With examples from Disneyland he illustrated areas of experiences management, which are of ultimate importance for any tourism manager.

The best paper certificate was awarded to Anita Zatori (Corvinus University of Budapest) for her paper “Experience-Centric Service Innovation and Value Co-Creation – Lessons from Tour Providers”. The award ceremony took place at the Seegrube during the farewell lunch, on 2000m above sea-level. A special issue of the Emerald journal „International Journal of Culture, Tourism and Hospitality Research“ will be published in 2016 and will present some of the finest papers of this conference (edited by Mike Peters and Andreas Kallmuenzer).
