2016 MOF Awards

Submission Deadline extended to September 12, 2016.

The Travel and Tourism Research Association awards program was developed to encourage and recognize excellence in the field of travel and tourism research and marketing.  Entrants are judged on quality, originality, creativity, usefulness, results and benefits to the travel and tourism industry. 


  1. Be sure to include in your submission the specific name of the award for which you are submitting along with your complete contact information as well as all supporting materials.   SUBMIT HERE
  2. DEADLINE:  Entries for Marketing Outlook Forum Awards must be received on or before August 31, 2016.
  3. MOF Awards will be presented at the 2016 Marketing Outlook Forum in Fort Lauderdale, FL USA on October 25, 2016.  Winners will be notified by September 15, 2016.
  4. The awards committee reserves the right not to present an award in any given year.  Non-winners will not be notified and original materials will not be returned.

Young Professionals Rising Star Award

The Rising Star Award is presented to a young professional (age 35 or under) employed in the travel and tourism industry.  ttra wishes to recognize this person for commitment to increasing his/her expertise in the industry, demonstrated leadership abilities, and outstanding accomplishments that have added value to travel and tourism.

The young professional with the winning nomination will receive a plaque, a one year Premier ttra membership and a complimentary registration to the 2016 ttra Marketing Outlook Forum.  (Attendance is expected.)  


  • Young professionals (age 35 or under) who match the above listed attributes must be nominated by a current ttra member or member organization.
  • No self nominations allowed.
  • Nominees must have worked in the travel and tourism industry for at least one year.  

To nominate a deserving person for award consideration, please submit the following information:

  • Nomination form.
  • Summary document detailing why this nominee should be considered for the award to include atleast three examples of the above attributes (commitment, leadership, accomplishments) for the period covering August 1, 2015 to August 1, 2016.
  • Include supportive materials that reflect the listed attributes such as resumes, press releases, recommendation letters, links to programs or events, etc.


J. Desmond Slattery Professional Marketing Award
The J. Desmond Slattery Professional Marketing Award is presented to the travel marketing professional who has made a significant contribution to travel and tourism marketing.  ttra wishes to recognize the award winner with a plaque, complimentary registration to the 2016 ttra Marketing Outlook Forum (attendance is expected) and a one year Premier ttra membership.
  • Nominee must be a professional employed in the travel marketing industry.
  • Self nominations are allowed as well as colleague nominations.
  • Nominee is not required to be a current ttra member.
  • The contribution to the industry (program, project or event) will be judged on its originality, creativity, clarity of message, outcomes or results and overall marketing excellence.
  • An entry for this award may not be submitted for any other ttra award.

Criteria:  Submissions for award consideration must include the following information:

  • Nomination form.
  • A descriptive narrative of the marketing-related program, project or activity with the attributes listed above.
  • This work should have been completed between August 1, 2015 and August 1, 2016.
  • Include supportive materials such as DVDs, posters, print advertising, etc. (any evidence of the nominee's role in the project).


John and Joan Markham Tourism Marketing Award
This award was established in honor of John and Joan Markham for the almost 30 years of dedicated service by John Markham as the stalwart financial planner and treasurer for the international Travel and Tourism Research Association.  With Joan steadfastly at his side, the two of them have been unfaltering in their support for ttra over the years and forever committed to its success.  It is John’s impressive financial plan that has seen ttra safely through some formidable financial years. 
The award winner will receive a one year student membership, a complimentary conference registration to the 2016 Marketing Outlook Forum (MOF) along with paid travel expenses to include airfare, ground transportation (shuttle), and hotel accommodations.  A check for $150 to be used for incidentals and a plaque will be presented to the winner at the MOF.  Round trip travel to the MOF and lodging arrangements will be made and paid for by the Travel and Tourism Research Association.  (Attendance is expected.)


  • Nominee must be an undergraduate or master’s level student (not doctoral student) between January, 2016 - December, 2016.
  • Although membership in ttra is NOT a requirement, membership in any research organization should be noted.
  • Nomination form
  • Submit a five page paper responding to:   

(a)   trends likely to influence destinations over the next 20 years?

(b)  how best, destination marketing organizations can respond to those trends

Paper must focus future trends and a tourism marketing response.  This paper must be completed between January 1, 2016 - August 31, 2016.

  • Include two (2) recommendation letters from 2 different professors.
